Ten reasons for recycling-

1. To save money. ‘Pay to throw’ is coming soon we will all have to pay extra if we exceed our waste limits.

2. To be less wasteful. Why landfill  valuable metal, glass and plastic when it can be reused?

3. Industry is now reliant upon recycled material,

particularly reclaimed steel and aluminium.

4. Manufacturing from raw materials  is environmentally costly. Producing a can from recycled materials requires much less energy.

5. To reduce the need for more landfill sites.

6. Waste is burned in incinerators.   More recycling, reduces the need to burn and reduces pollution.

7. Being waste conscious saves money. Don’t buy excessively don’t waste excessively. In business they appoint a quantity surveyor to monitor waste because it makes financial sense!

8. Our population is growing and our taste for consumables is growing too! These twin factors put pressure on waste disposal

9.The UK has to honour international agreements on waste. If we don’t reduce waste the UK will have to pay financial penalties. This will get passed on to us.

10. Waste recycling is part of a bigger picture. Together with other environmental measures we hope to make a difference.

We are struggling to control waste in the UK.

Each person creates

511 Kilo of waste each year.

376 Kilo of this is not recycled and goes to landfill.

As a country we are on mission to slash  this waste.

The UK has agreed to reduce landfill waste from

14 million tonnes (2004) to

11.2 million tonnes by 2010.

If we don’t -the UK pays an international fine.

Beware   Pay- to-Throw is coming soon!

It is the scheme designed to focus

our minds on reducing excess waste.

Learn how to avoid these charges by

smart shopping, clever recycling

and crafty composting.
