Cans and metal recycling

All cans are welcome.  They do not have to be separated according to metal type- so aluminium may be mixed with steel.

Don’t worry about labels as these will be removed in the recycling process.

Make sure the can can contains no lumps of food.

If you wish to rinse the can- use dishwater.

Aluminium foil and metal food trays welcome.

Please remove plastic covers, tops and lids where possible. (These plastic items go in general waste)

Larger metal objects

Larger metal objects such as unwanted cookers or old radiators should be taken straight to the local recycling site. If you need assistance, your local council can collect these from you as a separate collection.

Computers and TVs

Many older computers and TVs are out of date. Unwanted items like these these  have to be dealt with in a responsible way by your recycling centre.  If you can’t take the item to the refuse centre yourself- phone your local council and arrange a separate collection

Fridges and freezers

Many old fridges and freezers contain CFCs. These are particularly harmful to the ozone layer. You should contact your local council for your specialist recycling site.

On no account dump a fridge or freezer as they are potential death traps for young children.

Copper and lead

Take any large quantities to a scrap metal dealer who will give you the market value for your scrap.

Sort and save money!

Aerosol cans

Check with your local council- each area varies.

For the recycling bag/bin they must be empty and they must have plastic lids and nozzles removed.

Cornwall  and Cambridge accepts them. Portsmouth does not.

Never crush an aerosol can as although it may be empty it can still be pressurised

Sort and save the environment!

We waste tonnes of aluminium every year in landfill .

Mining fresh aluminium is harmful to the environment. Aluminium has to be extracted from an earth- like material called bauxite. The extraction process involving electrolysis and requires chemicals and temperatures up to 800c.

Foil ‘effect’ sweet wrappers are general refuse. Place in with  general rubbish.
